Kyphosis

Normally our spine has a shape of “S”. The physiological curve in the lumbar and cervical area is called lordosis, and the curve, at the thoracic area is called kyphosis.

Under the term “kyphosis” or “hyperkyphosis” we understand increase outside of the normal range of the thoracic curve.

Most popular types kyphosis are:

  • Postural kyphosis. That is the most popular type. Usually the girls are suffering more often than the boys and the development of it is in child age. Usually the cause is bad posture and weakness of the spine muscles. The vertebraes are with a normal shape and there isn’t fast progression.
  • Kyphosis type “ Shoermann” again is developing in the early childhood ages and there are here structure changes in the vertebraes. Often it is combined with scoliosis (kyphoscoliosis). To diagnose you have to make a Scanner, to check the position of the vertebraes.
  • Cognitive kyphosis. It is an inborn deformity of the spinal column.

Kyphosis could be developed and with a trauma in the spine or with an appearance of degenerative or with the appearance of dystrophic changes.

The symptoms of the kyphosis are pain in the Thoracic area. Sometimes you could observe muscle spasm . with or without compression of the nerve roots.

This curvature of the spine is because of bad posture while sitting, and therefore there is a deep muscle disbalance. It is important to change some wrong habbits , so your spinal curvature will not progress. Try to make your working place comfortable through regulation of your chair, desk and monitor, get up more often. Try to keep your head and spine straight, while walking, driving or sitting.

With increases kyphosis you could observe specific muscle disbalance, which is called upper crossed syndrome.

We could make you a home exercises program , with which you could strengthen the weak muscles and stretching exercises for the tensed muscles. Those exercises you must do every day.
